{"id":819,"date":"2018-03-05T10:21:17","date_gmt":"2018-03-05T09:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/web.umons.ac.be\/fs\/?p=819"},"modified":"2018-03-05T10:21:17","modified_gmt":"2018-03-05T09:21:17","slug":"recherche-dirigee-lumons-decrypte-comportements-de-matiere-grains-publiee-physical-review-letters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web.umons.ac.be\/fs\/fr\/recherche-dirigee-lumons-decrypte-comportements-de-matiere-grains-publiee-physical-review-letters\/","title":{"rendered":"Une recherche dirig\u00e9e par l\u2019UMONS qui d\u00e9crypte les comportements de la mati\u00e8re en grains publi\u00e9e dans la \u00ab Physical Review Letters \u00bb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Une \u00e9quipe de chercheurs franco-belges dirig\u00e9e par Pascal Damman, Professeur \u00e0 l\u2019UMONS et responsable du Laboratoire Interfaces et Fluides Complexes de la Facult\u00e9 des Sciences, vient d\u2019\u00e9lucider un des comportements \u00e9tranges de la mati\u00e8re en grains.<\/p>\n<p>Comme tous les enfants ont pu l\u2019exp\u00e9rimenter un jour, les tas de sable sec n\u2019offrent que tr\u00e8s peu de r\u00e9sistance : ils s\u2019effondrent souvent sous leur propre poids. Par contre, il suffit d\u2019ajouter quelques connections physiques entre les grains pour former des cha\u00eenes granulaires pour obtenir un mat\u00e9riau bizarre, aussi r\u00e9sistant que la pierre tout en conservant la propri\u00e9t\u00e9 de s\u2019\u00e9couler librement.<\/p>\n<p>Par une \u00e9tude combinant exp\u00e9riences et th\u00e9orie, les chercheurs de l\u2019UMONS, de l\u2019ESPCI (\u00c9cole sup\u00e9rieure de physique et de chimie industrielles de la ville de Paris) et de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Bordeaux, viennent de montrer que les liaisons entre les grains produisent des contraintes topologiques qui aboutissent \u00e0 des points de blocage.<\/p>\n<p>Ces v\u00e9ritables noeuds diss\u00e9min\u00e9s au sein du syst\u00e8me bloquent tout mouvement par un m\u00e9canisme de friction auto-amplifi\u00e9e. Dans ce m\u00e9canisme, plus l&rsquo;op\u00e9rateur exerce une force sur le syst\u00e8me, plus celui-ci r\u00e9siste, conduisant \u00e0 une amplification exponentielle de la r\u00e9sistance. C\u2019est donc l\u2019op\u00e9rateur lui-m\u00eame qui cr\u00e9e la r\u00e9sistance du mat\u00e9riau!<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019un point de vue th\u00e9orique, la mod\u00e9lisation statistique des points de verrouillage a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9e gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une analogie audacieuse dans laquelle les cha\u00eenes granulaires sont d\u00e9crites comme un polym\u00e8re \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat fondu, un syst\u00e8me non soumis \u00e0 la temp\u00e9rature est ainsi d\u00e9crit \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019un m\u00e9lange de chaines agit\u00e9es d\u2019un mouvement Brownien.<\/p>\n<p>Au-del\u00e0 de leur utilisation \u00e9vidente pour \u00ab simuler \u00bb et mieux comprendre les polym\u00e8res denses \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9chelle macroscopique, ces syst\u00e8mes pourraient aussi \u00eatre int\u00e9ressants dans d\u2019autres domaines tels que\u202f: les textiles, les fibres biologiques, les nouveaux mat\u00e9riaux de construction, \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Ce travail, publi\u00e9 dans le dernier num\u00e9ro de \u00ab Physical Review Letters \u00bb, a \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 par les \u00e9diteurs pour un Focus sur le site Physics et fait la couverture du journal.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019article est accessible via ce lien : https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prl\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevLett.120.088001<br \/>\nLa Focus Story via celui-ci: https:\/\/physics.aps.org\/articles\/v11\/20<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plus d\u2019infos ?<\/strong> Prof. Pascal Damman &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/web.umons.ac.be\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pascal.damman@umons.ac.be<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>La photo ci-dessus montre le r\u00e9sultat final de l\u2019\u00e9talement d\u2019un petit tas de granulaires lorsqu\u2019on modifie le nombre de maillons dans la cha\u00eene. De haut en bas et gauche \u00e0 droite, le nombre de monom\u00e8res par cha\u00eene est de 3, 5, 10 et 30. On constate clairement que les tas avec des cha\u00eenes longues ne s\u2019effondrent plus sous l\u2019action de leur propre poids.
