A Unit with a double legacy

The Functional Analysis Unit is now established. This unit enjoys a dual legacy: that of the Probability and Statistics Unit previously led by Karl Grosse-Erdmann and that of the Mathematical Analysis Unit previously directed by Catherine Finet.

Karl Grosse-Erdmann and Catherine Finet are two former professors from the University of Mons who have left their mark on the Department of Mathematics of our University and the research in analysis conducted there. Karl Grosse-Erdmann developed research in Linear Dynamics and truly invigorated this field of study through his own work. Catherine Finet, for her part, enabled the Department of Mathematics at the University of Mons to gain recognition within our country, taking on various responsibilities such as the presidency of the BMS from 2005 to 2008, as well as beyond our borders by inviting prestigious mathematicians to Mons and forging strong ties with researchers analysis in France.

The Functional Analysis Unit is committed to sustaining research in Linear Dynamics in Mons and to living up to this double legacy.

    After brilliantly defending his thesis in July 2023 under the supervision of Alfred Peris and Sophie Grivaux, Antoni López-Martínez, a young Spanish mathematician, secured, a year later and in quick succession, a position of FNRS Postdoctoral Researcher in our research unit and a permanent position at the Polytechnic University of Valencia in Spain.
