Description

The doctorate is the third cycle of university studies leading to the academic degree of doctorate. This title, representing the highest qualification in a particular field of study, is awarded by the EFE following the presentation of a doctoral thesis.

A doctoral student’s job involves a combination of research work (symposia, conferences, publications, research visits abroad, etc.) and personalised training (thematic and methodological seminars, etc.), enabling them to acquire cutting-edge scientific knowledge in their field as well as a wide range of cross-disciplinary skills.

Throughout their project, doctoral students are accompanied by their supervisor (and possible co-supervisor), who helps, supervises and advises them.  More broadly, they become part of a research project led by a team of researchers.  While the doctorate is a personal project, it is also part of a local, national and international scientific network, which gives it meaning and scientific scope.

Access conditions

In accordance with the doctoral regulations, applications for admission must be sent to the school by the candidate on the basis of a complete file describing the university course followed (with transcripts and copies of diplomas obtained) and attestations relating to any prior learning that the candidate wishes to have validated.

Admission to studies and work relating to the preparation of a doctoral thesis is decided by a committee that verifies:

  1. the candidate’s eligibility for studies and work;
  2. the candidate’s aptitude for independent work and scientific research;
  3. the admissibility of the thesis subject;
  4. the agreement of a UMONS research unit or department to host the student;
  5. the existence of a promoter willing to monitor the work.

Program and structure

The work involved in preparing the thesis corresponds to at least 180 credits acquired after initial training of at least 300 credits (Master’s degree).  Of the 180 doctoral credits, 60 must be acquired through doctoral training leading to a research training certificate.

Opportunities

A doctorate can lead to a wide range of career opportunities, thanks to the different cross-disciplinary skills developed by doctoral students during their training:

  • Researcher within a university or research centre
  • Teacher in higher education (colleges, universities, etc.)
  • Company executive or project manager
