Description
The Certificat d’aptitude pédagogique approprié à l’Enseignement supérieur (CAPAES) is the teaching qualification required to teach in non-university higher education institution (Hautes Écoles and Enseignement supérieur de Promotion sociale).
Once you have been appointed to a vacant post, you have six years in which to obtain the CAPAES.
The training (theoretical and practical) provided at UMONS leads to a certificate of achievement, which is a prerequisite for submitting a professional dossier to the external inter-network commission (Commission CAPAES). The practical part of the course is run in collaboration with the Ecole Henri La Fontaine (promotion sociale).
The CAPAES is required for appointment to a permanent position within a non-university higher education institution.
Access conditions
You can only register on the CAPAES course organised by the University if you are already working in an Haute École or other higher education institution (promotion sociale) as a lecturer, teacher or teaching assistant.
Program and structure
The CAPAES syllabus is made up of three parts, which are implemented simultaneously:
- The first part consists of 120 hours of theoretical training;
- The second part consists of 90 hours of practical training;
- The third part consists of the preparation and submission of a professional dossier. The dossier consists of a personal piece of writing in which the CAPAES candidate analyses their professional career in higher education (Haute Ecole, promotion sociale) and provides evidence of practice in their field of expertise and teaching practice.
The theoretical training includes three content areas: 30 hours of socio-political training, 30 hours of psycho-relational training and 60 hours of pedagogical.
The practical training, organised and managed by the training supervisor, comprises three areas of content: support for practice, analysis of practice and professional development.
The CAPAES programme varies slightly depending on whether or not you already hold a teaching qualification. If you already hold a teaching qualification, you will take the “short” CAPAES programme. If not, you will have to take the “long” programme.
Teaching profile
The programme description defines the expected learning outcomes, i.e. what the student should know, understand and be able to achieve at the end of a learning activity, a teaching unit or a study cycle (Bachelor's, Master's, etc.).
