Description

Since the Reform of Initial Teacher Training, students wishing to enter the teaching profession must hold a Master’s degree in Teaching (Section 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5).

The Master’s in Teaching Section 5 (60 credits) qualifies graduates to teach in upper secondary education (from 4^th to the 6^th year).This programme replaces the AESS.

Organised at UMONS in partnership with the Haute Ecole Provinciale en Hainaut-Condorcet (HEPHC) and the Haute Ecole en Hainaut (HEH), this Master’s degree aims to improve the quality of teacher training. It promotes the sharing of experience and expertise in order to train teachers who make a difference and are capable of adapting to changes in society and to the diversity of school populations.

This programme lasts one academic year. Classes are held in Mons in the evenings and on Wednesday afternoons.

As part of the Master’s in Teaching (Section 5): Chemistry, students must select a secondary subject from Biology or Physics.

Program and structure

The Master’s in Teaching (Section 5): Chemistry totals at least 60 credits, including:

Core courses (28 credits), including:
- Practical focus: 5 credits
- Teaching focus: 8 credits
- Human and Social Sciences: 15 credits

Teaching Chemistry: 8 credits

Teaching Chemistry OR Biology : 4 credits
Work placement: 20 credits

At the beginning of the programme, students registered on the Master’s in Teaching (Section 5) must pass a French language proficiency exam. If they fail the exam, 5 credits will be added to the student’s annual programme.

Teaching profile

The programme description defines the expected learning outcomes, i.e. what the student should know, understand and be able to achieve by the end of a learning activity, a teaching unit or a study cycle (Bachelor's, Master's, etc.). Learning outcomes are defined in terms of knowledge, expertise and soft skills.

At the end of the Master's, students will have acquired the following institutional, social and cultural skills:

Act as a social and cultural figure in schools and society, including during times of change, embrace diversity, and develop civic practices to boost social cohesion.
Understand ethical issues and respect the ethical and regulatory frameworks of the profession from a democratic and responsible perspective.
Analyse the organisational and institutional environment of the education system and act within it, in particular by interacting with colleagues, parents, management, among others, in order to:
- Be involved in the school's management and participate in efforts to improve the education system of the French Community of Belgium;
- Make the school a place where students learn, develop and are educated in a positive atmosphere, rather than a place of selection.
Be fully aware of their administrative situation and keep track of their personal administrative records.
