Description
A lot of writing in the academic and research environment is descriptive and flat. How can we achieve greater impact in our writing? Through planning effective messages and using techniques to draft persuasive arguments for readers be they fellow academics, funding partners, sponsors or industry.
Learning Aims
By the end of this course participants will be able to
- Understand how to plan and structure effective communication messages,
- Take into consideration the background, knowledge and attitude of readers,
- Draft powerful messages which have impact and provide factual proof to support arguments,
- Edit and adapt texts for different audiences and purposes
Content
Module 1 Writing with impact – developing arguments and opinions
- Writing with impact – attention, interest, desire,
- Attention, interest, desire and action for readers (AIDA).
- Communication objectives of our writing
Module 2 Writing and drafting techniques
- The elements of effective professional writing – clear, simple, precise,
- Topic sentences that help build effective paragraphs,
- Text cohesion – connecting / linking devices: words and ideas,
- An introduction to generative AI and what it can (and cannot) in writing,
- How to set the most effective AI prompts to get the best results
Format
What is going to happen?
Participants send us a sample of their writing and we will assess and make tracked changes comments to help you understand the areas you need to work on. You take away a version of your text with notes that will help you to adjust your writing.
- Workshop: input on principles
3-hour workshop for a group of up to 12 people
- Written assignment
Participants complete and submit a writing task for review and feedback
- Follow-up coaching
Coaching in pairs (60 minutes) on 24th or 27th November, ONLINE.
