Discovering the Benedictine Monastery of Catania (online)
The University of Catania has prepared an immersive experience in Catania’s Benedictine monastery, the Monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena, a late Baroque monument and one of the largest Benedictine monasteries in Europe.
Construction of the building began in 1500 and is still underway. It is an example of the architectural integration of different styles through different eras: there is a Roman house, cloisters and a roof garden. The monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, it houses the Humanities Department (DISUM) of the University of Catania.
The monastery is a unique place that traces the human and historical events of the city on the slope at the foot of Mount Etna, from ancient times to the present day.
The monument is open to the public every day and is one of the largest monasteries in Europe.
University of Catania has prepared a virtual tour, that will be available on the Eunice Youtube channel.
