Description

The Bachelor’s programme in Biomedical Sciences provides basic training in basic and life sciences. It is for students who want to understand, analyse and solve medical problems. It combines the study of the functioning of the human body and its pathologies with the perfect knowledge of biological, biochemical and molecular processes.

The first year of this course may also be chosen by students who do not feel ready to take the medical entrance examination immediately after having obtained their CESS, or those who have not passed this test. They will receive teaching which covers the pre-requisites assessed during the entrance examination, which favours their success in the following assessment. In case of major difficulties in their learning of basic sciences in the first term, the student can opt for help with basic sciences. During the second term, the student will be able to take an optional course enabling them to strength their skills in text analysis, which is useful for the preparation of the entrance examination in Medicine. Moreover, educational components successfully passed in the first year may also be validated in other courses of our Faculty in the following domains: biology, chemistry and engineering.

Program and structure

The programme begins with a year of studying the scientific bases in chemistry, physics, biology, general biochemistry and general physiology, all of which are necessary to understand the subjects taught later on in the course.

The pre-requisites for this course are the skills taught at secondary school. The teaching of Block 1 focuses on the disciplines which constitute the tools of the scientific reasoning applied to biomedical sciences (biology, mathematics, chemistry and physics). In order to master these subjects, they are taught in the first two terms of the 2017-2018 academic year.

Block 1 includes as much practical work as theory, allowing successful integration of the subject. “Support for Success” is also in place, whereby students can attend remedial sessions and take specific tests on practical work.
Block 2 and Block 3 are entirely reserved for learning biomedical sciences.

In the second year, students will learn about the functioning of the human body, focusing specifically on physiological, histological, anatomical, biochemical and molecular aspects.

In the third year, the pathological aspects will be addressed for each discipline. Teaching has been organised in a way that there is a perfect continuity between the two years.

Disciplines as diverse as immunology, neurophysiology or toxicology are taught.

Again, one third of the course is reserved for practical work. Students also have the opportunity to carry out placements in analytical laboratories and university research laboratories.

During each year of Bachelor’s, an English course has been introduced to prepare students for the practice of scientific English.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this programme, students will be able to:

  • tackle a scientific problem, understand it, and speculate on its resolution
  • use all the scientific bases acquired to address more specific disciplines, such as oncology or molecular Imaging
  • work in an experimental laboratory.

Opportunities

The Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences gives access to the Master's in Biomedical Sciences with a research focus, and the Master’s in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology with specialist focus on Molecular Physiopathology (ULB-UMONS collaboration).
