Description
The Faculty of Translation and Interpreting – School of International Interpreters provides training for future language professionals (translators, interpreters, teachers, intercultural mediators, communication officers, etc.). During their studies, prospective Bachelor’s degree holders in Translation and Interpreting acquire the general, linguistic and cultural knowledge required to be admitted onto the two Master’s programmes (in translation and interpreting) and their various specialist, teaching and research-oriented options. In addition, they become familiar with the techniques and strategies of interlinguistic transfer and are introduced to the practice of written and oral translation and interpreting.

Program and structure
The Bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting focuses primarily on the pragmatic functions of language. Emphasis is placed on communication in a professional context and in a contemporary environment. The working language is French.
A comprehensive programme is offered in Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish.
An introduction to a third foreign language is also part of the programme. Options are available in the languages listed above, as well as Catalan, Modern Greek, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese and Swedish.
In the first year, students focus on strengthening their French language skills, learning two foreign languages and broadening their cultural knowledge. In the second year, they are introduced to more contrasting and analytical approaches. Courses and activities gradually focus on translation and interpreting. In addition to specific exercises in these areas, cultural courses (civilisation, literature) taught in a foreign language provide context for that language.
The third block completes this linguistic and cultural immersion with a study trip abroad (lasting one or two semesters) at a partner institution which has a student mobility agreement (Erasmus or other) with the University of Mons, or a semester-long linguistic immersion at a multilingual organisation in Belgium.

Teaching profile
The programme description defines the expected learning outcomes, i.e. what the student should know, understand and be able to achieve by the end of a learning activity, a teaching unit or a study cycle (Bachelor's, Master's, etc.). Learning outcomes are defined in terms of knowledge, expertise and soft skills.
At the end of the Master's, students will be able to:
- Linguistic skills - Master the working language and foreign languages.
- (Inter)cultural skills - Understand and embrace cultural similarities and differences.
- Technological skills - Use common technological tools.
- Professional skills - Use lexicographical resources and reference works to carry out language mediation activities, individually and in groups.
- Cognitive skills - Conduct documentary research and report on it critically.
