Program and structure
The work involved in writing the thesis corresponds to at least 180 credits acquired after initial training of at least 300 credits (Master’s degree or equivalent). Of the 180 doctoral credits, 60 must be acquired during doctoral training leading to a research training certificate.
The content of doctoral training in Political and Social Sciences is defined according to the research theme.
Access conditions
To complete a thesis in the field of Political and Social Sciences, you must first have successfully completed a university course of at least 300 credits. In practice, graduates of a university institution are eligible to apply for a PhD if they hold a 120-credit Master's degree in one of the disciplines covered by the field in question or, under the system prior to the Bologna reform, a Bachelor's degree and a DEA. Graduates of a university institution outside the European Union may be admitted to the doctoral programme if they have completed a university course leading to a doctorate in the country concerned. In addition, the ESHS requires candidates to have obtained at least a Distinction (14/20), or equivalent, in the study cycle or degree giving access to the PhD programme.
If this training has not been acquired in one of the disciplines in the field, or if the number of credits is insufficient, the PhD Admissions Board may propose additional training, based on analysis of the previous curriculum.
For further information, please consult our handbook.
In addition, all candidates are asked to contact the PhD Admissions Board of the ESHS to confirm that they meet the formal conditions for access to the doctorate.
Opportunities
One of the aims of a PhD is to prepare students for a career in research. There are research mandates at universities, but this is not the only career option.
