Description

The 120-credit Master’s degree prepares students for a career in research through in-depth courses, a final year’s work in a laboratory in the Department of Chemistry and an internship in a research laboratory outside the University, usually abroad.

This 120-credit in-depth master’s degree offers 2 pathways: an “UMONS pathway” or an “EUNICE pathway”, organised as part of the EUNICE European University(eunice-university.eu).

In the EUNICE pathway, the final year’s work will be carried out in a research laboratory at one of the partner universities (University of Catania or Politechnika Poznanska (PUT Poland)) under the joint supervision of a promoter from the UMONS and a promoter from the partner university.

Target audience

Students with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (or equivalent subject to approval) who are interested in basic training.

Program and structure

The in-depth Master’s degree in Chemical Sciences is divided into three main areas: Materials Chemistry; Organic Chemistry and Spectroscopy; and Bio-inspired Chemistry and Chemistry of Living Systems.

These programmes are based on a combination of in-depth courses, introductory research placements and a dissertation in the final year in one of the Chemistry Department’s research laboratories or in a laboratory abroad as part of the EUNICE programme.

Distribution of credits for the “UMONS” pathway

  • Compulsory courses – 36 credits
  • Optional courses – 26 credits
  • Courses and placements specific to the major – 30 credits
  • Dissertation – 28 credits

EUNICE” pathway – information and distribution of credits

As part of the in-depth Master’s degree in Chemical Sciences, the University is offering an “EUNICE” pathway, which will be open to in-depth students who have chosen the Bio-inspired Chemistry and Chemistry of Living Systems orientation. This pathway is organised as part of the EUNICE European University(eunice-university.eu) in collaboration with the University of Catania (Italy) and Politechnika Poznanska (Poland).

The programme consists of a Block 1 identical to that of the Advanced Master’s in Bio-inspired Chemistry and Chemistry of the Living World, and a Block 2 comprising :

  • Participation in a one-week summer school (in September), organised on one of the 3 campuses (Catania, Mons or Poznan) – 6 credits ;
  • A first four-month period consisting of courses at the UMONS (12 credits) and distance learning courses at the universities of Catania and Poznan (12 credits) to be chosen from a list (see list link);
  • A 28-credit dissertation (which will involve physical mobility devoted to a research project carried out in a laboratory at the University of Catania or Poznan);
  • A compulsory course (2 credits).

Teaching profile

The programme description defines the expected learning outcomes at the end of the cycle (Bachelor's, Master's, etc.). The programme description defines the expected learning outcomes, i.e. what the student should know, understand and be able to achieve at the end of a learning activity, a teaching unit or a study cycle (Bachelor's, Master's, etc.). Learning outcomes are defined in terms of knowledge, expertise and soft skills.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Use their acquired professional skills according to the objectives of the degree programme
  • Apply their highly specialised and integrated knowledge in the field of chemistry, and demonstrate a broad range of skills, complementing those acquired at Bachelor's level.
  • Contribute, alone or as part of a team, to the management and implementation of a major chemistry development project
  • Manage research, development and innovation projects in the field of chemistry and/or its applications.
  • Communicate clearly in the scientific field
  • Develop and implement a high degree of autonomy
  • Apply high quality scientific methodology.

Opportunities

Chemistry is a key discipline within the sciences, occupying a key position between biology and physics. Through its scientific advances, it allows us to understand both living and non-living matter. This understanding and these advances have led to the development of countless applications that have quickly become irreplaceable in our daily lives, for example, the probe molecules used in medical imaging, the diagnosis and treatment of our illnesses, the new technologies of our televisions, the surgical adhesives that replace the need for stitches, etc. There are countless examples of how chemistry contributes to our lives. Everything we handle has a direct connection to chemistry!
More recently, chemistry has offered new perspectives for a more rational use of energy with the development of low-consumption (O)LED lamps and the design of high-efficiency photovoltaic cells. In this way, it makes an important contribution to solving current environmental and sustainable development problems.
