Research Institute for Information technology and Computer science

INFORTECH focuses its research on information technology and computer science, and more specifically on technologies for detecting, formatting, transmitting, storing, analysing, and using data and signals, regardless of its volume or mode.

The 2000s saw the development of ICT, combining computing, internet and telecommunications.

In addition, major advances have been achieved in microelectronics and disciplines related to information and signal processing, and more fundamental research has been conducted on software systems, information systems and communication systems.

The INFORTECH Institute works in the domains of computer science, engineering science and social sciences (sociology and psychology). The collaborations created as a result of this interdisciplinary research have led to the presence of a wide range of equipment and skills within the Institute. This has thus enabled INFORTECH to promote and carry out research activities in the fields of information technology and computer science, as well as in industrial applications.

INFORTECH collaborates closely with research centres in the field of information technology, namely MULTITEL and CETIC, which are officially recognised by the Région wallonne (Belgian regional Government).

When light becomes a communication channel: Véronique Georlette honoured by AIMs

    27 May 2026
Véronique Georlette, a researcher in the Department of Electromagnetism and Telecommunications at UMONS, has been awarded the Guibal & Devillez Prize by AIMs, the alumni association of the Faculty of Engineering. This distinction recognises her work on Visible Light Communication, a technology that uses visible and infrared light to transmit data. At UMONS, her research explores a complementary approach to conventional wireless communications, with potential applications in smart cities and industrial environments. Continue reading
