French Language Courses

The majority of courses at the University of Mons are conducted in French. Students must master both spoken and written French in order to understand their course and succeed in their studies.

The University of Mons offers various intensive French language courses (FLE) at the beginning of each semester and throughout the academic year.

These courses are free for INCOMING students.

The Languages and Internationalisation Department organises French language courses (French as a foreign language):

  • Preparatory courses before the start of the academic year
  • Courses throughout the academic year
  • Cultural integration activities

Preparatory courses before the start of the academic year

Two intensive FLE courses are organised for Incoming international students and international researchers:

The first course takes place in September (first half of September), 40h, two groups.
The second takes place in January (last week of January), 30h.
These are preparatory courses for the classes given during the academic year, aimed at international students and researchers.
Both courses offer face-to-face tuition and cultural activities to help students and researchers integrate into the local and national socio-cultural environment.
A certificate of attendance can be issued at the end of the course.
These courses are not credit-bearing and are free for Erasmus students and UMONS members.

Courses throughout the academic year

Evening FLE courses organised in the 1st semester, for the university’s international students and researchers (60 hours).
Students are assigned to the group corresponding to their language level on arrival (A1, A2, B1 or B2).
Each course (Q1 and/or Q2) may be credited with 5 E.C.T.S.
An assessment is scheduled at the end of each four-month course. A certificate of knowledge can be issued on request.

FLE courses can be taken over a single semester period, depending on the mobility period.
If the Incoming student’s mobility is spread over the whole academic year, they may take the French as a Foreign Language 2 course, following the French as a Foreign Language 1 course. They will be placed in the language level that corresponds to the level achieved at the end of term 1.

Note: FLE courses for students in the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation are given during the day.

Content:

FLE courses are given with a constant concern for linguistic and cultural exchange.
Emphasis is placed on oral skills: students must be able to interact in everyday situations; and on written skills, with a view to university work.
Attending a FLE course also means discovering the cultural richness of Belgium and Mons in particular.
