UMONS was founded in 2009 as a result of the merger between the University of Mons Hainaut and the Engineering Faculty of Mons, whose origins date back to 1837.

- In the 2019 U-Multirank, UMONS ranks among the TOP 100 WORLDWIDE for 2 of the 5 criteria: international orientation and research. For UMONS, 75% of the indicators are good or excellent (good/very good: 20/29) and 90% are at or above average (26/29).
- In the QS World University Ranking 2020, UMONS ranks among the top 150 in the world, specifically in 130th position for the number of citations.
