Description

UMONS is organising this joint degree course with 3 Hautes Ecoles (HEH, HEPHC, HEAJ) and a University (ULB), on 5 potential sites (Mons, Charleroi, Tournai, Morlanwelz, Namur), with 2 possible timetables (day/adapted). At UMONS, the coordination and organisation of these courses has been entrusted to the Teacher Training Institute (EFE).

Access conditions

The only access condition of the AESS in Construction and Urban Planning is a Master’s degree in Architecture.

Target audience

The AESS teacher training programme is for those who wish to teach their specialist subject to students in upper secondary education.

Program and structure

The course comprises 30 credits and is structured around three main areas:

  • Advanced knowledge of psychology, pedagogy and methodology, as well as education and training organisations and institutions
  • Methodological and didactic understanding of the discipline
  • Teaching practice and placements

Teaching profile

The teaching profile presents the institutional training profile expected at the end of the cycle (Bachelor's, Master's, etc.). It is described in terms of learning outcomes, i.e. what the student should know, understand and be able to achieve at the end of a learning activity, a teaching unit or a study cycle. Learning outcomes are defined in terms of knowledge, expertise and interpersonal skills.

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Appropriately interpret situations in and around the classroom, drawing on knowledge of construction and urban planning
  • Adapt to different school audiences by drawing on knowledge of construction and urban planning Maintain effective partnerships with the teaching institution, colleagues and parents
  • Understand the legal reference material so as to practise their profession appropriately
  • Understand the subject-specific and interdisciplinary knowledge that justifies their teaching activities
  • Understand the subject didactics that guide teaching activities
  • Acquire a broad general knowledge to awaken students' cultural interests
  • Develop interpersonal skills to meet the demands of the teaching profession
  • Assess the ethical issues involved in day-to-day teaching practice
  • Work as part of a school team
  • Design, test, assess and improve teaching methods
  • Maintain a critical and autonomous relationship with science
  • Plan, manage and assess learning situations
  • Take a reflective look at their own practice
  • Present information in a neutral, unbiased way
  • Have an excellent command of the language of instruction, both orally and in writing.

Opportunities

The AESS teaching qualification allows you to teach in upper secondary education. As a teacher, you will be allocated courses according to your qualifications. These refer to the degrees and relevant experience you need to carry out your duties. The French Community of Belgium has set up an online tool to help you find out which job you can do according to your qualifications.
